The Famine in Ireland

6th Feb 2020

P6/7 have been travelling to Derryhale PS every Thursday morning to learn about the famine which struck Ireland in 1845. The children from both schools have been investigating the reasons for the famine and its impact on the people of Ireland.

They researched the source of the famine, potato blight fungus spores carried in the wind from Europe, and the reasons why this blight devastated Irish society. The children learned about the Irish farmers’ dependence  on the potato and were shocked to learn that when this crop failed, the people began to starve.

Both schools have planted seed potatoes which are monitored every day for growth and development.

The children have been challenged to draw scenes, storyboard and produce a movie using the app, Green Screen about their Shared Education topic.

There will be lots of opportunities for photographs when the children visit the Ulster American Folk Park on Wednesday 12th February. They are especially looking forward to exploring the emigration ship and seeing what life was like in the “New World”.
