Odd-Socks Day
Rocking Our Socks for World Down Syndrome Day!
Our school hallways were a whirlwind of color and patterns this week as students and staff "Rocked Their Socks" to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD).
From neon stripes to polka-dotted pairs, the "odd socks" were out in full force to raise awareness and celebrate the unique contributions of people with Down syndrome in our community.
Why the Crazy Socks? You might have wondered why we were all wearing mismatched or "crazy" socks. It’s actually for a very clever reason:
The Shape: Under a microscope, chromosomes look a lot like socks.
The Difference: Most people have two copies of each chromosome, but people with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome.
The Conversation: Wearing eye-catching, odd socks is a fun way to get people asking questions, allowing us to spread the message of inclusion and acceptance!
Together Against Loneliness The official theme for WDSD 2026 is "Together Against Loneliness." This year, the global community is focusing on making sure everyone—regardless of their abilities—feels valued, connected, and like they truly belong.
By wearing our odd socks, our school sent a loud and clear message: different is wonderful, and everyone has a seat at our table. Fun Facts About the Day Why March 21st? The date (3/21) was chosen because it represents the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
Global Celebration: WDSD has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012 and is celebrated in over 190 countries. The Goal: It’s all about advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome.
A huge thank you to all the families who helped their children pick out their wildest socks. Check out the pics below of the weird and wonderful sock pairings from the day.
