Saint Oliver Plunkett's Primary School

Saint Oliver Plunkett's Primary School is situated in the town land of Ballyhegan in the heart of the orchard county of Armagh. It offers places to children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. We also have excellent links with our feeder nursery and playgroup Orchard Preschool. Application forms for new P1 places are available online from the Education Authority and information on application forms for other year groups is available through contacting the school office. Parents may visit the School by arranging an appointment with the Principal.

A Catholic ethos is fostered throughout the school and a caring pastoral system ensures that strong links are nurtured between home, parish and the school.

St Oliver Plunkett's P.S advocates high standards teaching and learning and we provide a wide and balanced curriculum across all Key Stages. There is also a strong ideology within the school to promote the wide variety of talents that pupils have including their sporting and musical talents.

School History

St Oliver Plunkett’s P.S opened in September 1975 which coincided with the canonisation of St Oliver Plunkett hence the name of our school. It replaced the Old School in Ballyhegan which educated the local children from c1859 but as it lacked the much needed space for a football field and playground. It became obvious that a new site for a new school had to be found.

The new school opened with three classrooms, a staff room, a quiet room, a fully equipped kitchen and a large assembly room. The school was originally staffed by three teachers which has grown to its present complement of three assistant teachers, a Vice Principal and a Principal.

Due to a rise in school numbers, it became necessary to extend the current facilities and in 2008 a new school extension was built which included three new, large classrooms and well-appointed and provisioned indoor and outdoor play areas. St Oliver Plunkett’s is fully equipped with the technology and equipment needed to deliver the modern curriculum.
