S.O.P.P.S. Lift Academy Boys' Football Title
23rd May 2025
Our boys' and girls' teams participated in the prestigious and very competitive St. Patrick's Academy tournament last week and they both performed brilliantly yet again.
First up our girls competed against schools from County Tyrone in a very tight group and after 2 wins and a narrow loss, they were ever so unlucky not to qualify for the semi-finals as a highest placed 2nd team. Whilst this was very harsh on a strong and very talented girls' team, we are nonetheless hugely encouraged that the girls lost by the slimmest of margins to the eventual competition winners in Gaelscoil Uí Ruadh and as such they can be very proud of themselves!
And then it was the turn of the boys' team to take part and again, having been grouped against four other teams from all over the Mid-Ulster region, the lads never let us down and performed brilliantly to win each and every group game.
That pitted us against St. John's Eglish in the semi-final and a thanks to a strong first half performance, the boys got over the line and qualified for a 2nd St. Patrick's Academy final in a row. The final saw us play a very talented St. Peter's Collegeland's team, (who have pushed was all the way this year on a few occasions) but following a tight and tense first half, the St. Oliver Plunkett lads pulled away with a powerful end to the game and they ran out clear winners.
Needless to say, the boys' enjoyed their celebrations after winning such an illustrious and popular tournament and to cap off a wonderful day for the school, one of our own players - Sean McCann - was selected by the Academy staff to win the Player of the Tournament award. A truly remarkable achievement and one for Sean to be very proud of!
As ever, a huge thank you to the Academy for inviting us along for a wonderfully well run event and well done boys and girls yet again for your amazing efforts!
