Valentine's Maths, Graphs and Structured Play

18th Feb 2019

In the last few weeks before mid term, P.1 pupils have been exploring ice, making jigsaws, practicing emergent writing skills and making Valentine's Art.

In keeping with the Valentine's Day theme, pupils were able to develop their One to One Number Correspondence whilst developing their fine motor skills with a Valentine's maths activity. Pupils had to look at a card, recognise the number and count the hearts to make sure their number recognition was correct. Then, using tongs, pupils had to pick up and place the correct number of heart jewels onto the cards. Not as easy as it looks!!!!

P.1 pupils have also been exploring Data Handling and making graphs. We started by completeing graphs as a class on the RM Graph programme on the class computer. We extended this by making a Table of Results to show P.1's Favourite Fruit. In teams, pupils then had to practically make a graph on our Graph It Boards using information from the table on the Interactive Whiteboard. There was great teamwork and co-operation during this activity and all groups were able to construct the graph correctly. As consolidation, children then carried out some independent graph work in the Number Books.

Children have been using the Unifix cubes to count, represent numbers, make patterns and for some fun play time. We love the cube outline of Hailey-Jane's body as well as the super long track pupils made.

A big happy birthday to Liam who was 5 in February and a big thank you to Kayley for Mrs McKee's lovely Valentine's present.
